About Darlington Point
Darlington Point is a rural locality on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River in the Murrumbidgee Council area of south-western New South Wales, situated approximately 800 kilometres south-west of Sydney and around 110 kilometres south of Griffith. Spread across 725 square kilometres of Riverina plains, the township has a population of 1,030 as of the 2021 Census, with a notable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community accounting for around 18 per cent of residents. The area's economy is anchored by irrigated agriculture — including citrus, stone fruit, and rice farming — making it a productive part of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area.
The Murrumbidgee River is central to life in Darlington Point, providing opportunities for fishing, swimming, and boating, and supporting the region's irrigated farming industry. The town holds significant historical heritage, including the site of the Warangesda Aboriginal Mission — a place of deep cultural significance for First Nations communities — as well as the Toganmain Woolshed Precinct and the historic Carrathool Bridge. Darlington Point township offers essential services including a school, small supermarket, sporting facilities, and a strong sense of rural community, with residents travelling to Griffith or Leeton for more extensive shopping and medical services.
Darlington Point falls under postcode 2706 and is governed by Murrumbidgee Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
