About Dartmouth

Dartmouth is a remote alpine village in the Shire of Towong in north-eastern Victoria, established in 1973 as a construction camp for workers building the Dartmouth Dam on the Mitta Mitta River, approximately 455 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 52 kilometres north of Omeo. The village is situated at an elevation of 365 metres in a scenic valley at the confluence of the Dart and Mitta Mitta rivers, surrounded by the rugged Alpine High Country. The Dartmouth Dam — one of Australia's largest reservoirs and a critical component of the Murray–Darling Basin's water management system — directly adjoins the village, whose permanent population of around 130 consists primarily of dam operations and maintenance workers and their families. The area receives over 1,000 millimetres of rain annually and experiences a cool alpine climate with mean temperatures ranging from 7.7°C to 20.6°C.

Dartmouth offers a uniquely peaceful alpine lifestyle centred on the extraordinary natural assets of the Dartmouth Dam reservoir, the Mitta Mitta River and the surrounding Alpine National Park wilderness. The reservoir is one of Victoria's premier impoundment fishing destinations, famed for its large trout and golden perch populations, and attracts anglers, houseboaters and water sports enthusiasts from across the state. Omeo (52 km south) is the nearest township with services, while Wodonga (156 km north-west) is the nearest city with comprehensive urban facilities. The Bogong High Plains, Mount Hotham ski resort and the Snowy River National Park are all within a few hours' drive, making Dartmouth an exceptional base for alpine outdoor recreation.

Dartmouth falls under postcode 3701 and is governed by the Towong Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Indi, while state elections fall under the Gippsland East (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
