About Dunalley
Dunalley is a small coastal fishing village on the Forestier Peninsula in south-eastern Tasmania, located approximately 57 kilometres east of Hobart via the Arthur Highway and about 20 minutes from Sorell. The locality sits on the narrow isthmus that separates the Forestier and Tasman Peninsulas from the Tasmanian mainland, and is home to the historic Denison Canal — a waterway dug by hand in 1905 to allow boats to pass between Dunalley Bay and Blackman Bay. With a 2021 Census population of 333 residents, Dunalley is a tight-knit coastal community with a deep connection to the sea and local history.
Dunalley is known for its fresh seafood, particularly oysters, and serves as a gateway to the Tasman Peninsula and the world-famous Port Arthur Historic Site. The locality was significantly impacted by the January 2013 Tasmanian bushfires, which destroyed approximately one-third of the town's buildings; the community has since rebuilt with remarkable resilience. Local amenities include a primary school, small shops, and a hotel, while the broader surrounding area offers fishing, kayaking, and wildlife experiences that attract visitors en route to Port Arthur.
Dunalley falls under postcode 7177 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
