About Eaglehawk Neck
Eaglehawk Neck (officially Teralina / Eaglehawk Neck) is a narrow isthmus connecting Tasmania's Tasman Peninsula to the Forestier Peninsula in south-eastern Tasmania, sitting within the Tasman Council local government area. With a population of around 422, the locality serves as both a small permanent community and a popular holiday destination, with visitor numbers swelling significantly over summer as people return to their holiday homes. The area spans approximately 51 square kilometres and is notable for its rugged terrain, dramatically narrow geography — less than 30 metres wide at its narrowest point — and its deep colonial history as a key control point for convicts escaping Port Arthur.
Eaglehawk Neck is renowned for its remarkable geological formations, most notably the Tessellated Pavement — a naturally tiled rock platform on the foreshore that draws visitors from around the world. Pirates Bay, on the eastern side of the isthmus, is a popular surfing beach, while the area forms part of the Tasman National Park and is recognised as a World Heritage Site. The nearby Port Arthur Historic Site is a short drive south, making Eaglehawk Neck a natural base for exploring the Tasman Peninsula's rich convict heritage, stunning sea cliffs, and coastal walking trails.
Eaglehawk Neck falls under postcode 7179 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
