About Flying Fox
Flying Fox is a vast remote locality in the Northern Territory, situated in the Victoria River district of the NT's Top End, approximately 400 kilometres south of Darwin. Covering an extraordinary 17,516 square kilometres, the locality encompasses a large swathe of the arid and semi-arid savanna country of the NT's north-western interior. With a population of around 64 residents, Flying Fox is one of the most sparsely populated localities in Australia, with the area dominated by pastoral stations and remote Aboriginal communities.
The Victoria River region is known for its dramatic sandstone escarpments, wetlands, and the Victoria River Gorge, which draws adventurous travellers along the Victoria Highway. Timber Creek, the nearest small township, provides a roadhouse, basic services, and access to the Keep River National Park. Life in Flying Fox is defined by the remote pastoral and Aboriginal community lifestyle of the NT's interior, with the wet season wet and dry season dry cycle shaping all aspects of daily existence.
