About Gapuwiyak
Gapuwiyak, also known as Lake Evella, is a remote Aboriginal community in north-eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, situated approximately 550 kilometres east of Darwin within the East Arnhem Region local government area. The name Gapuwiyak means 'brackish water' in Yolŋu, referring to the adjacent Lake Evella after which the community is also named. With a 2021 Census population of 705 and 121 dwellings — of which over 76 per cent are social housing — the community reflects the broader profile of remote Northern Territory Aboriginal settlements.
Gapuwiyak is a Yolŋu community with deep cultural connections to the Arnhem Land landscape, including the wetlands, escarpments, and coastline of this ecologically and culturally significant region. The community is served by basic essential services and a school, and is connected to Darwin by a weekly barge service up the Buckingham River for supplies, as well as by air. There is no sealed road access, making it one of the more isolated communities in Australia; most residents' daily lives are centred on the community itself, traditional cultural practices, and the surrounding Country.
Gapuwiyak falls under postcode 880 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mulka electorate.
