About Greenbushes
Greenbushes is a historic mining and timber town in the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes, located in the South West region of Western Australia approximately 250 kilometres south of Perth. With a population of 365, the town was established in 1888 following the discovery of tin deposits, and today is best known as the site of one of the world's largest lithium ore deposits, operated by Talison Lithium. The town's name is derived from the distinctive bright green Oxylobium lanceolatum shrubs that once contrasted vividly against the surrounding grey eucalyptus woodland.
Residents enjoy the quiet character of a small working town nestled within jarrah and marri forest, with the scenic Blackwood River region close at hand. The nearby township of Bridgetown, approximately 18 kilometres to the north, provides shops, schools, healthcare, and community services to meet daily needs. The broader South West region is celebrated for its wine country, national parks, and food and tourism trails, offering Greenbushes residents a richly natural lifestyle despite the town's compact size.
Greenbushes falls under postcode 6254 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warren-Blackwood (South West) electorate.
