About Hebel
Hebel is a small historic township in south-west Queensland, situated in the Shire of Balonne approximately 4 kilometres north of the New South Wales border and 190 kilometres south of St George on the Castlereagh Highway. Covering an extraordinary 1,697 square kilometres of semi-arid grazing country, the locality recorded a population of 62 at the 2021 Census. Hebel was established in 1889 — originally as Kelly's Point — and is one of Queensland's most remote and historically significant border settlements.
Hebel is known for the historic Hebel Hotel, established in 1894 as a Cobb and Co stopover, and the Hebel Store — a building dating to 1897 which still stands as two structures including the original store and adjacent Hebel Dance Hall. Visitors and travellers making the long journey on the Castlereagh Highway find a general store, caravan park, hotel, and coffee shop in this remote outback village. The nearest larger service centres are St George to the north and Lightning Ridge (NSW) to the south.
Hebel falls under postcode 4486 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
