About Hexham
Hexham is a low-lying locality on the bank of the Hunter River, situated approximately 15 kilometres north-west of Newcastle's CBD within the City of Newcastle local government area. Part of the broader Hunter Region, Hexham covers 18.7 square kilometres of river floodplain, industrial land, and rural properties stretching between the Pacific Highway and the Hunter River. With a 2021 Census population of 157, the locality has a predominantly industrial and rural character, anchored by significant transport infrastructure including the Pacific Highway bridge crossing over the Hunter River.
Hexham holds the distinction of having its own railway station on the Main Northern line, with an hourly NSW TrainLink service running between Newcastle and Maitland for most of the day — making it well-connected for a locality of its small size. The suburb is an important logistics node for the Hunter Valley, with the Pacific Highway and Hunter Expressway both passing through. While retail and dining options within Hexham itself are limited, the adjacent Newcastle suburbs and Maitland city centre are easily accessible by road or rail.
Hexham falls under postcode 2322 and is governed by the Newcastle Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Paterson, while state elections fall under the Wallsend electorate.
