About Hoskinstown
Hoskinstown is a small rural locality in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, situated approximately 38 kilometres east-south-east of Canberra within the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council area. Sitting at an elevation of around 761 metres, the locality covers roughly 82 square kilometres of rolling farmland and open grassland. With a population of just 191 people at the 2021 Census, Hoskinstown is one of the quieter communities near the national capital, retaining a distinctly rural character that has changed little over generations.
Named after John Hosking — a prominent 19th-century Sydney merchant and the first elected Mayor of Sydney — Hoskinstown offers residents an unhurried lifestyle surrounded by scenic countryside and wide-open skies. The surrounding district is predominantly used for grazing and agriculture, attracting landowners and hobby farmers who value privacy and space. Proximity to Bungendore and Queanbeyan means that essential services, shops, and schools are within a comfortable drive, while Canberra's amenities are accessible within about 45 minutes.
Hoskinstown falls under postcode 2621 and is governed by Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Monaro electorate.
