About Lerida
Lerida is a small rural locality in the Upper Lachlan Shire of New South Wales's Southern Tablelands, situated approximately 11 kilometres south-east of Gunning, 69 kilometres north of Canberra and 243 kilometres south-west of Sydney at an elevation of 766 metres. The locality straddles the Upper Lachlan Shire and Yass Valley Council boundaries and recorded a population of 38 at the 2021 census, comprising sheep and cattle farming families on the cool, elevated tableland plains. Lerida lies on the road from Gunning toward Collector, within a landscape of open grasslands, snow gum woodland and gentle basalt plains typical of the Southern Tablelands. The locality is home to the historic Lerida woolshed, a substantial 19th-century pastoral building reflecting the area's long wool-growing heritage.
Lerida offers a quiet pastoral lifestyle in a historically significant grazing district that supplied wool and beef to Australian markets for well over 150 years. Gunning (11 km north-west) is the nearest service town, known for its antique shops, historic main street and the Gunning railway station on the Main South Line providing access to both Sydney and Canberra. Goulburn (46 km east) is the nearest city with a full range of urban services, hospital, schools and further rail connections. The surrounding Southern Tablelands attract Sydney and Canberra weekenders drawn to cool-climate scenery, historic pastoral properties and the peaceful, uncrowded landscapes of the NSW tablelands.
Lerida falls under postcode 2581 and is governed by the Upper Lachlan Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Hume, while state elections fall under the Monaro electorate.
