Lort River is a very remote rural locality in the Esperance district of southern Western Australia, situated approximately 700 kilometres east of Perth and approximately 60 kilometres north of Esperance. The locality covers around 1,030 square kilometres of remote agricultural and mallee country on the edge of the Nullarbor fringe. With a 2021 Census population of approximately 60 residents, it is one of WA's most sparsely settled localities.
Esperance, approximately 60 kilometres to the south, is the main regional centre for the Goldfields-Esperance district, providing a hospital, schools, supermarkets, and an airport. The area near Lort River is known for its remote broadacre farming, and the surrounding Esperance region is celebrated for pristine beaches and the Cape Le Grand National Park. A private vehicle is the only practical transport.
