About Marrakai
Marrakai is a large, sparsely populated rural locality in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 76 kilometres east of Darwin City in an unincorporated area outside any formal local government authority. The locality spans an expansive 2,207 square kilometres of tropical savanna, floodplains, and wetlands near the Adelaide River and the shores of Van Diemen Gulf, and recorded a population of 564 at the 2021 Census. A true Top End climate prevails, with mean maximum temperatures around 33°C, high humidity, and approximately 1,435 millimetres of rainfall concentrated in the wet season from November to April.
Marrakai is predominantly pastoral and agricultural land, with cattle grazing the seasonally flooded grasslands and billabongs that define the Top End's landscape between the Wet and Dry seasons. The Adelaide River and surrounding wetlands are renowned for outstanding barramundi fishing and exceptional wildlife watching, including saltwater crocodiles, migratory birds, and diverse native fauna. There is no public transport serving the area; the Arnhem Highway provides the main road connection to Darwin, and all amenities — including supermarkets, schools, healthcare, and entertainment — are accessed in the Darwin metropolitan area approximately 76 kilometres to the west.
Marrakai falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
