About Rakula
Rakula is a very large and extremely remote locality in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 60 kilometres east of Darwin in the coastal lowlands and floodplains of the Top End. The locality covers an enormous 2,845 square kilometres of tropical savanna, tidal flats, monsoon forest, and wetland country. With a 2021 Census population of approximately 59 residents, it is one of the largest and most sparsely populated localities in the Territory.
Darwin, approximately 60 kilometres to the west, provides all significant urban services as the NT capital city including hospitals, major retail, the university, and Darwin International Airport. The surrounding Top End landscape is ecologically rich, featuring the Mary River wetlands and flood plains that support enormous populations of saltwater crocodiles, barramundi, and migratory birds. A private vehicle is the only practical means of transport.
Rakula falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
