About Moogara

Moogara is a small rural locality in Tasmania's Derwent Valley, situated approximately 14 kilometres west of New Norfolk within the Derwent Valley Council area. The locality covers a large area of approximately 126 square kilometres, of which around 78 per cent is protected parks and reserves, placing it adjacent to the boundaries of Mount Field National Park and the upper Derwent catchment. The name Moogara is said to be of Aboriginal origin, meaning "journey of one day," reflecting the locality's historical significance in the movement of early settlers through the valley. With a 2021 census population of 67, Moogara is a sparsely populated farming community with deep roots in the district.

Moogara was once a bustling hamlet with its own school, general store, and sawmills, home to dozens of farming families during its peak settlement period. Today the locality is characterised by its working farms, remnant orchards, and an abundance of natural reserves, with several families who are direct descendants of original settlers still residing on the land. New Norfolk, the nearest town, provides schools, supermarkets, and medical services approximately 14 kilometres to the east. The locality's location on the fringe of Mount Field National Park gives residents exceptional access to bushwalking, waterfalls, and alpine landscapes, making it a distinctive and deeply rural address in southern Tasmania.

Moogara falls under postcode 7140 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
