About Muchea
Muchea is a small rural town in the Shire of Chittering, located approximately 43 kilometres north-north-east of Perth in Western Australia. Covering an expansive 216 square kilometres, the townsite supports a population of 921 and serves as an agricultural and pastoral locality on the northern fringe of Perth's metropolitan reach. The name Muchea derives from the Nyoongar word 'Muchela', meaning 'water hole', reflecting the area's significance to Aboriginal people for its access to fresh water.
Muchea is well known across Western Australia as the home of the Muchea Livestock Saleyards, one of the state's most significant cattle and sheep selling centres. The town also holds a piece of space history — in 1960, the Muchea Tracking Station was established as part of NASA's Mercury project, and in 1962 it became the site where the first Australian spoke with a space traveller, as John Glenn orbited Earth. The surrounding district is characterised by farming properties, market gardens, and bushland, offering a genuinely rural lifestyle with Perth's urban amenities accessible within an hour's drive.
Muchea falls under postcode 6501 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
