About Narrandera
Narrandera is a regional town in the central Riverina district of south-western New South Wales, situated on the Murrumbidgee River approximately 98 kilometres from Wagga Wagga and 549 kilometres from Sydney. The town lies at the junction of the Newell and Sturt Highways, making it an important road hub for travel across inland New South Wales, and serves as the administrative centre of the Narrandera local government area. Home to approximately 4,369 residents with a median age of 44, Narrandera has a predominantly Australian-born population with a significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of around 14 per cent.
The town's character is shaped by its Riverina setting — irrigated agriculture including rice, citrus, and livestock underpins the local economy alongside services and government employment. The Murrumbidgee River provides a popular recreational corridor with parklands, camping grounds, and fishing spots, while Lake Talbot Water Park is a beloved local attraction especially during summer. Narrandera has a rich Wiradjuri heritage, and its commercial centre on East Street offers the essential services, schools, and a hospital that serve both the town and the surrounding rural district. Housing is highly affordable, making it accessible to first home buyers and those seeking a relaxed country lifestyle.
Narrandera falls under postcode 2700 and is governed by Narrandera Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cootamundra electorate.
