About Nemarluk
Nemarluk is an expansive remote locality in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 210 kilometres south-west of Darwin near the Daly River and the Timor Sea coast. It is one of Australia's geographically largest localities, covering over 13,800 square kilometres of tropical savanna, floodplain, and coastal country. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 305, reflecting a very low density of settlement across this vast area, with community housing comprising around half of all dwellings.
The locality encompasses remote Indigenous communities and pastoral leases set amid dramatic tropical landscapes, including the wetlands and estuaries of the Daly River system. The area is rich in biodiversity, with barramundi fishing, birdwatching, and traditional land management forming core aspects of community life. Road access is seasonal, with the wet season limiting travel on many outback tracks, making the locality largely self-reliant and strongly connected to its natural environment.
Nemarluk falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
