About Nganmarriyanga
Nganmarriyanga (formerly known as Palumpa) is a remote Aboriginal community located within the West Daly Regional Council area of the Northern Territory, approximately 362 kilometres south-west of Darwin in the Daly River region. With a population of around 364 residents and an area of 46 square kilometres, the community is home to the Wodidj and related Aboriginal peoples who maintain deep cultural connections to this Country. The community was renamed from Palumpa — taken from a nearby cattle station — at the request of the Community Council, reflecting a return to its traditional identity.
Nganmarriyanga is surrounded by the tropical savanna landscapes of the Northern Territory's Top End, with the Daly River and its floodplains providing a rich ecological setting. Essential services including health, education, and community housing are provided within the community, with 100% of dwellings being social housing that reflects the government-supported nature of remote community living. Road access to Darwin is long and may be disrupted during the wet season, making the community relatively self-contained and reliant on strong local services and community cohesion.
Nganmarriyanga falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
