About New Mapoon
New Mapoon is a remote Indigenous community on the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, located near the northern tip of the Australian mainland within the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council. With a population of approximately 412 spread across a large 99 square kilometre area, New Mapoon is one of several Aboriginal communities clustered near Bamaga in the far north. The community carries deep historical significance — its residents are descendants of the original Mapoon people who were forcibly relocated from their traditional country near Weipa in the 1960s, with New Mapoon established as their resettlement community.
Life in New Mapoon centres on a strong Indigenous cultural identity, community connection, and the extraordinary natural environment of Cape York's northern tip, bordered by tropical coastline, wetlands, and the Torres Strait. The community has access to essential services including a store and health clinic within the Northern Peninsula Area communities cluster. New Mapoon is extremely remote — it is accessible by light plane to Bamaga Airport or via the Peninsula Development Road in the dry season only, making wet season isolation a feature of life. The region is renowned for its fishing, traditional land management, and the remarkable biodiversity of the surrounding tropical landscape.
New Mapoon falls under postcode 4876 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cook electorate.
