About Umagico
Umagico is a remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community located on the Northern Peninsula Area of Cape York, Far North Queensland, approximately 4.8 kilometres west of Bamaga near the northern tip of Australia. Governed by the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council, the locality covers 51 square kilometres and had a population of 394 at the 2021 Census. Situated nearly 1,000 kilometres north-north-west of Cairns, Umagico is one of five communities on the Northern Peninsula Area and among the most geographically isolated localities on the Australian mainland.
Umagico has a deep connection to sea and Country, with residents maintaining the traditional practices and cultural identity of the Angkamuthi people. The community sits adjacent to coastal waters and is surrounded by the tropical landscapes of Cape York's tip. Essential services including a local school and community store are available within the community, while Bamaga provides the nearest health centre, government services, and an airstrip. Road access is via the Cape York Developmental Road, which can be impassable in the wet season, making air travel a vital link for this remote peninsula community.
Umagico falls under postcode 4876 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cook electorate.
