About New Mexico
New Mexico is a small rural locality in the New England region of New South Wales, situated approximately 400 kilometres north of Sydney near the town of Tamworth. The locality covers around 102 square kilometres and recorded a population of approximately 59 residents at the 2021 Census. It lies in the upper Namoi River district on the slopes and plains of the New England Tablelands, used for mixed grazing, beef cattle, and some cropping.
Tamworth, approximately 50 kilometres to the south-east, is the regional capital of the New England and provides comprehensive services including a hospital, university, major retail, and an airport, as well as the famous Country Music Festival held each January. The New England countryside features dramatic gorges, rolling hills, and the distinctive character of the tablelands plateau. A private vehicle is essential.
New Mexico falls under postcode 2346 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Tamworth electorate.
