About Oyster Cove
Oyster Cove, also known by its Indigenous name Putalina, is a semi-rural locality in southern Tasmania situated within the local government areas of Kingborough and Huon Valley, approximately 20 kilometres south-west of Kingston and around 35 kilometres south of Hobart. With a population of around 330, the area covers approximately 20 square kilometres of coastal and semi-rural land alongside the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. The locality holds profound historical significance as an Indigenous Protected Area, reflecting its deep connection to the Nuenonne people and its role in Tasmanian Aboriginal history.
Oyster Cove carries significant historical weight as the site where 47 surviving Tasmanian Aboriginal people, including Truganini, were transferred from Wybalenna on Flinders Island in 1847 — one of the most poignant chapters in the nation's colonial history. Today, the locality is a quiet coastal and semi-rural community offering residents access to the scenic landscapes of southern Tasmania and the Huon Valley's renowned apple orchards and food tourism. Kingston provides the full range of services within a short drive, and Hobart is accessible within 40 to 55 minutes. The area appeals to those seeking a peaceful, nature-rich lifestyle with deep historical meaning.
Oyster Cove falls under postcode 7150 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Franklin (Huon) electorate.
