About Peak Hill
Peak Hill is a remote locality and historic goldfield site in the Murchison region of Western Australia, located approximately 885 kilometres north-east of Perth within the Shire of Meekatharra. Covering an extraordinarily large statistical area of over 26,500 square kilometres, the locality sits at an elevation of 608 metres on the edge of the Mid West goldfields. With a population of 121 according to the 2021 Census — the majority male, reflecting its mining-camp character — Peak Hill is centred on gold mining activity that dates back to 1897.
Gold was first discovered at Peak Hill in 1892, and the townsite was gazetted in 1897, making it one of Western Australia's oldest goldfields. The site encompasses four open-cut mines — Main, Jubilee, Fiveways, and Harmony — spanning over 2,160 hectares. The nearest significant service centre is Meekatharra, approximately 120 kilometres to the south, which provides fuel, supplies, and basic services. Peak Hill is best suited to those working in the mining industry or those drawn to remote outback adventure.
Peak Hill falls under postcode 6642 and is governed by the Meekatharra Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Durack, while state elections fall under the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
