About Piturie
Piturie is an extremely remote locality in far western Queensland, covering an enormous area of approximately 4,610 square kilometres in the Channel Country near Boulia. With a 2021 Census population of 57 residents and a postcode median income of around 68,000 dollars — reflecting mining and remote work supplements — it is one of the most isolated localities in Queensland. The vast flat plains and gibber desert landscape define this part of western Queensland.
The Channel Country is characterised by the braided river systems of the Cooper Creek, Diamantina, and Georgina Rivers, which flood spectacularly after inland rains, transforming the desert into wildflower meadows. The locality is accessed from the Boulia area, which has a small airstrip and basic services. There is no public transport, and unsealed roads may be impassable during floods. Life in Piturie revolves around large cattle stations and the remarkable isolation of the outback.
Piturie falls under postcode 4825 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barkly electorate.
