About Tianjara
Tianjara is an extremely remote rural locality in the Shoalhaven region of New South Wales, situated in the high tableland country of the Morton National Park hinterland approximately 40 kilometres inland from Ulladulla. Covering over 81 square kilometres of rugged sandstone plateau and escarpment terrain, the locality had a population of just 7 at the 2021 census — making it one of the most sparsely populated localities in NSW. The area sits within the spectacular Budawang Range, known for its dramatic wilderness landscape. It falls within the federal electorate of Hume and the NSW state electorate of South Coast.
Tianjara is not a service locality but rather a wilderness area on the high plateau of the Budawang Range within Morton National Park. The landscape is characterised by wild sandstone pagodas, deep canyons and ancient rainforest pockets, attracting experienced bushwalkers and wilderness photographers. Access is via rough unsealed roads and tracks that are impassable in wet weather. The locality's extreme isolation means it is suitable only for self-sufficient rural landholders, with Nowra or Ulladulla being the nearest centres for any services — each roughly 50 kilometres away via winding mountain roads.
Tianjara falls under postcode 2622 and is governed by the Shoalhaven Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Hume, while state elections fall under the South Coast electorate.
