About Wangetti
Wangetti is a small coastal locality in the Douglas Shire, Far North Queensland, situated on the Captain Cook Highway approximately 40 kilometres north of Cairns and 27 kilometres south of Port Douglas. The locality covers around 43 square kilometres and is positioned between the Coral Sea coastline to the east and the lush ranges of the Wet Tropics to the west. With a 2021 Census population of 68 residents across approximately 18 dwellings, Wangetti is a sparsely settled coastal community in one of Australia's most scenically spectacular regions.
Wangetti Beach is a quiet, uncrowded stretch of coastline favoured by locals seeking an escape from the more popular tourist beaches to the south, offering calm walks with views of the Coral Sea and palm-fringed shores. The locality is set to benefit from the Wangetti Trail — a 94-kilometre purpose-built walking and mountain biking track from Palm Cove to Port Douglas passing through the area, with the first stage from Palm Cove to Ellis Beach having opened in 2024. Residents rely on the village of Palm Cove to the south and Port Douglas to the north for services and amenities, with a car essential for everyday needs as there is no public transport serving Wangetti directly.
Wangetti falls under postcode 4877 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cook electorate.
