About West Toodyay
West Toodyay is a historic locality in Western Australia's Avon Valley, situated approximately 85 kilometres north-east of Perth within the Shire of Toodyay. Formerly the original townsite of Toodyay established on the Avon River in 1836, the settlement was abandoned after repeated flooding and the town relocated upstream in 1860. Now known as 'Old Toodyay', the locality spans around 60 square kilometres and recorded a population of 497 in the 2021 Census.
West Toodyay offers a quiet rural lifestyle in the scenic Avon Valley, with easy access to the heritage town of Toodyay just a few kilometres upstream — home to historic buildings, a museum, cafes, and the popular Avon River precinct. The broader Avon Valley region is known for its wildflowers, wine trails, and weekend escapes from Perth. Residents rely on private vehicles for daily commuting, with the Toodyay Road providing the main connection to the Great Eastern Highway and Perth.
West Toodyay falls under postcode 6566 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
