About Wickepin
Wickepin is a small town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, located approximately 214 kilometres south-east of Perth and 38 kilometres east of Narrogin within the Shire of Wickepin local government area. With a population of 380 at the 2021 Census, the town was established in 1908 following the extension of the railway and grew as a service centre for the surrounding grain and sheep farming district. Wickepin sits at an elevation of 337 metres on the undulating Wheatbelt plains, with an economy shaped almost entirely by broadacre agriculture.
Wickepin is perhaps best known beyond the district for its connection to Albert Facey, whose landmark memoir "A Fortunate Life" was partly set in the area; the Albert Facey Homestead is preserved nearby as a heritage attraction. The town has a primary school, sporting clubs, a hotel, and basic local services, with Narrogin serving as the nearest regional hub for more substantial shopping and medical care. The community is tightly knit and rural in character, with the wide grain-growing landscapes offering a peaceful, unhurried lifestyle for those who call it home.
Wickepin falls under postcode 6370 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
