Woodsreef is a small rural locality in the New England region of New South Wales, situated approximately 440 kilometres north of Sydney near the town of Bingara in the Gwydir Shire. The locality covers around 368 square kilometres of open hill and plains country and recorded a population of approximately 59 residents at the 2021 Census. The area is known for the Woodsreef Asbestos Mine — a former chrysotile asbestos mining operation that was one of the largest in Australia before its closure in the 1980s.
Bingara, approximately 30 kilometres to the north, provides the main local services including shops, a school, and community facilities, and is a charming heritage town on the Gwydir River known for its Georgian revival cinema. The surrounding Gwydir Shire features the scenic Gwydir River valley and mixed grazing properties. A private vehicle is essential as no public transport serves the locality.
