About Amata
Amata is a remote Aboriginal community located in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the far northwest of South Australia, nestled in the Musgrave Ranges at an elevation of around 760 metres. The community is home to approximately 393 Anangu residents and falls under the jurisdiction of the APY Lands Council, one of the largest Aboriginal land areas in Australia. Access to the APY Lands requires a permit for non-residents, and the community is roughly 1,100 kilometres north of Adelaide and around 500 kilometres south of Alice Springs.
Life in Amata centres on strong Anangu culture, language, and connection to Country, with the Musgrave Ranges providing a striking desert landscape of red rock formations and mulga scrub. The community is served by a community store, a primary school, and a health clinic, with essential services supported by the APY Lands Council and South Australian government agencies. Residents are largely self-sufficient within the community, though travel to Alice Springs or Port Augusta is necessary for specialist services and larger retail needs.
Amata falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA).
