About Iwantja
Iwantja, also known as Indulkana, is a remote Aboriginal community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia, situated approximately 1,016 kilometres north-west of Adelaide in the state's Far North region. With a population of 338 residents at the 2021 Census, the community is governed by the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Council and represents one of the six main communities on "The Lands". It is one of the most remote inhabited localities in South Australia, set amid the arid landscapes of the central Australian desert.
The community takes its name from Iwantja Creek and is home to a predominantly Anangu population whose culture, language, and connection to Country remain central to daily life. Art, music, and traditional knowledge are important aspects of community identity, and Iwantja is home to a noted Indigenous arts centre. Essential services — including health, education, and food access — are provided within the community, though the area's extreme remoteness means that access to broader services requires significant travel, typically to Alice Springs or Coober Pedy.
Iwantja falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
