About Black Springs
Black Springs is a small rural locality on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, situated approximately 24 kilometres south of Oberon and midway between Oberon and Taralga along the Tablelands Way. The locality had a population of 227 at the 2021 Census and covers a large area of 173 square kilometres of tablelands terrain within the Oberon Council local government area. It originated as a forestry encampment for the pre-war plantings of Vulcan State Forest and remains closely associated with the timber industry.
Black Springs is well regarded by fossicking enthusiasts, with the surrounding area known for opportunities to find crystals and minerals in the local geology. The vast Vulcan State Forest provides a backdrop of dense pine plantations and native bush, popular with four-wheel drivers, campers, and nature lovers. The nearest town of Oberon offers the closest schools, shops, and services, while the unspoilt tablelands scenery attracts visitors seeking a genuine rural escape from Sydney, which lies roughly 200 kilometres to the east.
Black Springs falls under postcode 2787 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wollondilly electorate.
