Gurnang is a small, isolated locality in the Oberon local government area on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, situated approximately 48 kilometres south of the town of Oberon and around 200 kilometres west of Sydney. With a recorded population of 94 at the 2021 Census, the locality covers 58 square kilometres within the Gurnang State Forest. The census population primarily reflects the inmates of the Oberon Correctional Centre, a minimum security facility located within the locality.
The Oberon Correctional Centre, which opened in 1931, was originally established to provide labour for clearing and planting the Gurnang State Forest and has capacity for approximately 140 minimum-security inmates. The surrounding landscape is dominated by pine and native forest plantations at elevation on the Central Tablelands. There are no residential services, shops, or schools within Gurnang — the nearest town for all services is Oberon, about 40 kilometres to the north. The locality is essentially institutional in character, set within a remote forested environment.
