About Linga
Linga is a tiny rural locality in the Mallee region of northwest Victoria, situated on the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and the South Australian border, about 487 kilometres from Melbourne. With a population of just 13 people recorded in the 2021 Census, it spreads across 266 square kilometres of flat, semi-arid mallee scrubland. The locality falls within the Rural City of Mildura local government area and is flanked by the historic Pinnaroo railway line. Its name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning a place to linger or camp.
Linga is one of Victoria's most sparsely populated localities, offering an authentic outback experience far from the pressures of city life. The landscape is dominated by mallee eucalypts and dryland farming properties, with the Murray-Sunset and Big Desert wilderness parks nearby providing outstanding nature experiences. Essential services are found in the neighbouring townships of Underbool (11 km) and Boinka (8 km). Those who call Linga home are predominantly farming families who value wide-open spaces, self-sufficiency, and the quiet rhythms of remote rural life.
Linga falls under postcode 3509 and is governed by the Mildura Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Mallee, while state elections fall under the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
