About Panitya
Panitya is a remote rural locality in north-western Victoria's Mallee region, located within the Mildura Rural City Council area approximately 23 kilometres east of Pinnaroo (SA) and 10 kilometres west of Carina on the Mallee Highway. The locality covers a vast area of around 572 square kilometres of flat, arid Mallee scrubland and dryland farming country, with a 2021 census population of 67 residents. Panitya sits along the Ouyen to Pinnaroo rail corridor, with a former station marking its historical role as a service point for the surrounding farming district. The landscape is characterised by red sand, native Mallee vegetation, and broad wheat and cereal cropping paddocks typical of the Victorian-South Australian borderlands.
The locality is genuinely remote, with Murrayville (the nearest small township) providing a general store and fuel, while Mildura (the regional centre) lies approximately 200 kilometres to the north. The Mallee Highway is the main connection across the region. Panitya's surrounding areas include smaller localities such as Panitya East, Berrook, and Ngallo, and the entire district is among the most sparsely populated in Victoria. The locality appeals to broadacre farming families and those comfortable with the isolation and vast skies of the Mallee — a landscape of stark, ancient beauty unique to north-western Victoria.
Panitya falls under postcode 3512 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
