About Tarana
Tarana is a small rural locality in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, situated approximately 180 kilometres west of Sydney and about 25 kilometres north of the town of Oberon, within the Mid-Western Regional Council area. With a population of 187 residents across around 69 dwellings spread over 139 square kilometres, it is a lightly settled pastoral community in a charming valley setting. The locality sits on the historic Main Western Railway line, and the Tarana railway station — one of the oldest in the region, opened in 1872 — remains a significant heritage landmark.
Tarana is closely connected to the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway project, a volunteer-run initiative restoring the former Oberon branch line that once linked the locality to the nearby town of Oberon. The surrounding landscape is characterised by open grazing country, scattered timber and wool properties, and the cool climate typical of the Central Tablelands plateau. Oberon township provides the nearest access to schools, medical services, and shops, while Bathurst — about 35 kilometres to the north-west — offers a broader range of urban services.
Tarana falls under postcode 2787 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wollondilly electorate.
